Why dont you convert your fuel consumption to Ltrs per 100 kms
it is a lot easier and you get a better idea what you are using
I found this info on the Net and it is the same way that I do it
Stu

It's easy to work out your car's fuel consumption.

  • Next time you fill up, wait for the nozzle to click and stop pumping fuel into your car's tank
  • Then give it a few seconds for the fuel to settle, and top the tank up until the nozzle clicks again
  • The shape of some fuel tanks and filler necks sometimes means that the tank will take another litre or two, after the nozzle clicks off the first time, before it's actually full
  • Use this procedure while you're doing your consumption calculations and they'll be accurate, because your tank will always be filled to the same level each time. Don't, however, overfill it to the point where petrol is visible in the filler neck itself.

There's no need to note how many litres the tank takes at this stage.

  • Set your car's trip meter to zero, and go about your normal driving routine
  • Next time you fill up, record how many litres your car has used and divide this by the distance shown on your tripmeter, for a consumption figure expressed in litres per 100 km, the standard quoted in Australia.

Here's an example: Your car's tank takes 46.8 litres when you fill it up. The tripmeter shows 365 kilometres. Divide the kilometres driven by 100, to get, in this case, 3.65. Then divide the litres used by this number -- so here the calculation is 46.8 divided by 3.65 -- and you get a consumption rate of 12.8 litres per 100 kilometres.
The aim is to get that rate down.

IMPORTANT
The less fuel you use the less you must tank and this will in the end bring the prices down ..also dont drive round with a full tank in the town If you dont drive far then you dont need a full tank
20 ltrs will do. 50 ltrs weigh 50 kilogramms so you can reduce the weight of the car by 30 kilogramms and save fuel doing it

Hi Guys . i Took a new DLS 1.5 few days back and noticed the mileage is around 12Km per litre (AC ON). Is it normal for a new car to give such low mileage?? ... Is the computer LCD which predicts the mileage etc.. accurate??

Hi Sabrish, I also have DLS 1.5 and it is initially giving me milage of 15 KM/L.
It also depends on person's driving style and city road conditions.

Saumil , i feel we would need to probe more to find the exact issue, as you always had a good mileage on your car, have you tired visiting a different workshop, and getting the same checked up, as you may have some issue with setting or performance of the engine which is causing the drop in mileage, maybe some part requires replacement, cleaning or maintenance,

Did the dip start at some specific service, interval or period of time, try to remember and collate, it may help

Yeh, I changed from Bhavsar motors to The Milestone. They seem to be good wid their work.. They did sum tuning by connecting the Laptop and said it should do the needful.. Still i find the Mileage hasnt improved. I have 1 bar left and the car has done abt 624 kms.. Sad cause for the mileae test, we filled the car TILL THE BRIM(Literally). They got in 52 LTS...
Lets see where it ends now..
Else, one more trip to the Service station..(hate going there again n again)

I will be installing a ScanGauge II unit this weekend! Very exciting ... especially for us non-GLS/DLS owners who don't have mileage computers.

Will post as soon as I am able to connect it and get it running.

My brother was visiting in the US and I had asked him to get one for me. Costed about USD200 (express delivery) but u can get it at USD 160 (normal delivery)

Check it out on the web and see what all it can do.

I will now be a "hypermiling" Loganizer!

(Check out what "hypermiling" is too on the web) !!!!!!

Hey Tom,
Kewl stuff. I checked the webpage, was curious,

  • Does it just show MPG or even KMPL!??
  • Also, how is it to be installed!?
  • What are the features, only mileage or something more to it!

The ScanGauge is actually a portable Diagnostic Tool that simply plugs into the OBDII socket found inside the glove compartment in the Logan.

It shows a host of disgnostic data, besides being able to give realtime/trip/of fuel consumed/fuel remaining/FE/in both KmPL as well as in Litres/100km (Stu's favourite!)

REAL TIME DISPLAY
fuel - Mileage/Average/Fuel Economy(FE) - Page 4 Gauge
OF 4 OF THE FOLLOWING AT ONCE:
Litres-per-100km (LHK)
Litres-per-Hour (LPH)
Battery Voltage
Coolant Temperature
Intake Air Temperature
Throttle Position
Engine Load
RPM
Ignition Timing
Open/Closed Loop
Also maximum coolant temperature/max rpm/ max speed during a trip/etc

All in both imperial as well as metric.

Also any ECU diagnostic codes can be read and cleared

All serious Fuel Efficiency drivers and those who drive hybrid vehicles swear by this unit.

You have to read up extensive writeups/discussions on the web as well as on the sacangauge site to be able to comprehend the VAST amount of things this little isntrument is able to do.

It works!

And it is pretty small, only 4.5 " wide and 1.5" tall, so it doesnt matter what colour, because keeping it on top of the dashboard would be rather distracting durng driving

Some more tips for better milage for diesel logans

1) For Diesel engines, especially with turbo chargers, air intake is related to fuel economy. Keep your air filters clean for better milage; do it every 5000KM.

2) Make sure that the turbo charger is functioning at its full capacity in all gears. It deliver better power and fule economy. In other words, the engine RPM must be 1600+ (80 kmph in 5th gear will give a better milage)

3) Drive slow in lower gears that give adequate enginre RPM, never ride on clutch in slow speed. (Please note point 2) It will help in overtaking also.

4) Try to control the vehicle without brakes. ie adjusting acclerator and changing gears. A sort of planned driving (This is not posible in city)

5) maintain comfortable cabin temperature by adjusting the cool- hot nobe.(It works on thermostat) Cooler the cabin, more the fuel consumption.

6) Avoid unwanted twists on driving. (Power steering function on engine power)

7) Right tyre pressure (or slightly high - 30) will give better milage

I am getting 18.3 with AC on long rides (speed 110 - 140) and 16.5 with AC on for short trips.

Using only premium diesel, my vehicle crossed 22,000KM

PostSubject: ScanGauge II - User Report on Mahindra Renault Logan 1.4GLE   fuel - Mileage/Average/Fuel Economy(FE) - Page 4 Icon_minitimeFri Aug 01, 2008 4:16 pm

After installing the ScanGauge II, I have found the following to be the biggest culprits as far as bad fuel economy is concerned.

1. Start-Stop Traffic can lower the mileage to a huge extent.
For every 10-15 seconds you are idling you lose about .1 kmpl, so 2 minute stoppage can play havoc with the mileage.

2. Slow moving traffic (avg. below 20 to 25 kmph), having to apply brake often because the vehicle in front of you is moving slowly.

3. Staying in low gear really eats into mileage. (Not getting into 4th gear by 25-30kmph and into 5th gear by 40-45kmph)

4. Trying to maintain the same speed, upslopes/up flyovers/bridges/uphill.

===============================================
I have seen that on the same route that I am commuting (approx. 9km), I can get 12-13kmpl in moderate traffic, where I am able to be in 4th and 5th gear for sustained periods, with relatively few traffic stops.

Otherwise in bumper to bumper traffic, I cannot manage 6.5 to 8kmpl over the same route, (despite my BEST efforts, and with constant realtime feedback from the ScanGauge). Ath end end of the trip I can see that I have not averaged more than 9kmph!

Crawling in 2nd and 3rd gear is the worst condition for fuel economy.

So, traffic conditions play a HUGE part.

===============================================
So what can we do??

A) Commute at non-peak traffic hours if possible (I double my mileage just by doing this!!).

B) Coast: As soon as you see that you MIGHT have to slow down, release the accelerator and depress clutch/move to neutral. Let the rpm wind down to idle, try to coast for as long as possible., especially downhill, down bridges/flyovers.

C) Avoid braking as FAR AS POSSIBLE, anticipate and slowdown/declutch and coast till the last possible moment and brake to stop.

D) DWL: Rather than trying to maintain same speed, try to keep accelerator pedal in the same position till you reach the top. Speed up before starting the climb. You will see that your speed will keep reducing as you climb. This really saves fuel. OF course coast all the way down after this.
===========================

Very Happy The best INSTANT mileage achieved so far is 18kmpl, steady driving. Of,course if you deaccellerate, mileage shoots up to 35-60kmpl (only as long as your car is slowing down

============================
silent Another thing that I am observing is that is deaccelerating with gear engaged is bad for mileage. Good for brakes/bad for FE.

This keeps the engine rpm higher than necessary, ie 1700 -2000rpm rather than idle of 850rpm. Somehow, in the Logan, braking with engine load is not fuel efficient.

However, I have to investigate this further. In modern cars, the fuel should be cut-off during deacceleration, but I am not witnessing this in the Logan. Whether this is a vehicle problem, or whether ScanGauge is reading this wrong, I am still unsure.

Coasting by depressing the clutch will NOT save fuel !! Just take your foot off the gas and the engine will CUT OFF the fuel supply it
uses NO fuel when you dont give gas .It is designed this way

Another thing that I am observing is that is deaccelerating with gear engaged is bad for mileage. Good for brakes/bad for FE.

How can You deaccelerate without the gears ? you mean use the brakes with the clutch depressed or completly out of gear
That is a bad practise and if you need to speed up the car in an emergency you wont be able to do so fast enough (NO CONTROLL)
and once again deaccelerating in gear uses NO fuel

A very well described and written review of the gadget Tom.
Kudos to u!
Secondly,
Depressing the clutch as and when not required is always recommended. I agree that it can be dangerous at times to let your deceletate without lowering gears, but i must admit that i do the same. Unless u are on an express lane, which are not really available in cities here, u dont really neet to accelerate immediately, yes, braking in such a situation could be fatal at times.
I guess Tom is trying to illustrate points he observed by the help of the Gadget, to increase the FE. right!!!
Also, i have doubts in " deaccelerating in gear uses NO fuel "
I am not cery sure about this as when u decelerate, the RPM is always up there so obviously there is fuel consumed!
Correct me if i am wrong please.

Are u sayin that when we decelerate, and the RPM meter is at arnd 1500 odd, no fuel is consumed!
