Stu I have a question here. While driving how does one remember to look RPM before changing gears. As far as my driving goes i shift as per my conscious feeling that i get from the machine, as to whether it shall halt or knock if not shifted down wards or shall drag if accelerated hard and has to be shifted upwards. I don't know how to shift gears based on RPM. Even if i want i am not able to do this as it never comes naturally. How do you do this? Kindly share if there are any special tips.

- FIRST find a proper petrol pump with an automatic fuel cutoff
SECOND Get your tank filled at the SAME pump machine next time to get the Cut-off at the same point every time
THIRD this is the suggestion from my Workshop expert who drove my car and got 11.3kmpl *Change from 1st to second gear almost immediately (after moving 10 to 15feet) *2nd to 3rd when rpm touches 1600 to 1700rpm - accelerate gently *3rd to 4th again when rpm touches 1600 to 1700rpm -accelerate gently *get into 5th gear as soon as you hit 40 - 45kmph speed * keep accelerator pressed to hold at 1700rpm - you can occasionally touch UPTO 2000rpm but get back to 1600 - 1700rpm quickly and maintain speed of 60kmph
As little braking as possible, anticipate traffic ahead. Get into neutral - dont stay in gear with clutch while stopped
All this may not seem exciting, but on a daily commute we don't need the thrills of revving the engine.
A more advanced technique is to stay in the HIGHEST possible gear for the traffic condition you are in, pulsing the accelerator gently which is idling (800 to 1000rpm) to keep up with the car in front of you.
FOURTH Record all Date/Odometer/Fuel as often as possible
I am yet to try this in highway driving, but I have been able to really reduce petrol consumption in my day to day commuting
(Tank capacity is MORE than 50L more likely to be 56L - 58L)
Stu: You are probably getting better mileage (highway) even while pushing the rpm up to 2000 - 3000, we are trying to maximize mileage in bumper to bumper traffic in extreme heat conditions (full AC on), where traffic crawls at mo more than 50 - 60kmph at best hats off to you chief. I can never drive following all these tips. I would forget driving that way. does this mean i will always get poor mileage figures!!!

Like you say it will grow on you you play it by ear and feel you can feel if the car is labouring and you will also feel it in your pocket after 20000kms because you will need a new clutch just change your gears normaly but keep you ear or eyes on the revs Stu

| OK Mir ... to get things into perspective I was getting terrible mileage (much worse than your 11 - 13 kmpl) prior to my post where I detailed out the Mahindra Renault service technician's tips on how to shift gears. This is the 'official' way. From gettinge a mere 8-9kmpl I could achieve 12-14kmpl, which is what you are getting right now, which is quite OK .... However, ....... I subsequently got myself a ScanGauge II from USA, which is fully MR Logan compatible (unlike most other cars on the Indian roads) and using that combined with a more advanced "hypermiling" technique of Pulse & Glide, I am able to achieve the superior mileage of 20+kmpl. If anyone is interested in my P&G technique, here goes ... keep Engine Load at around 67% during a Pulse from 55kmph to 80kmph in 5th gear and then Glide in neutral down to 55kmph. With this technique, you really have to keep a huge gap between any traffic in front of you and behind you, like there should ideally be 50-100meters between you and the car in front of you, and ideally no one behind you at all, because that person is the one to get most irritated with the way you willl drive when you speed up and slow down constantly doung a Pulse & Glide These improved mileage figures again are only achievable in rather free flowing traffic conditions, like latenight city driving, empty highway, etc. and are rather difficult to achieve in our seriously slow-moving peak traffic conditions where it is bumper-to-bumper all the way from home to office, where you could be crawling at no better than 15kmph all the way, in such cases, getting a "mere" 10kmpl would be commendable! for further reading google "hypermiling" and "Pulse & Glide" or "P&G" for short | |

As u said, I am not expecting anything more than 10-11 kmpl with A/C in city driving.
The car is a very good purchase, although I was discouraged by many to not go for it....
I have couple of other concerns:-
1. There is a metallic creaking sound from the left door 2. I can sometimes hear the sound from beneath the car of the petrol sloshing...is it OK? Left Door creaking is standard noise which starts in all Logans once they have done some 1000 - 1500 kms. Service center guys will remove it successfully.
In new Logans specially petrol ones first time when the ignition is turned ON one can hear some fluid (seems to be petrol) passing from somewhere in the car. As a matter of fact i used to like this noise as it made me feel even more proud. However now it has vanished and does not come any more. OK the left creaking door is a bolt you will find on the inside of the left door it is like a long silver hinge and the bolts need tightning have a look and let me know if this was the fault .I had this fault on mine it is normal (not good work) but normal Stu

| I had been 2 wai near mahabaleshwar today & back with speed ranging from 80 to 110 km/hr. i drove the car 381 kms after i filled the tank upto the brim. on my way back i again filled up the tank upto the brim. it took 12.22 lts. that came to a average of 31 kms per litre of diesel.that was with 80% a/c on. this was my first drive after i replaced the company air filter to a knfilter one.i was previosly getting 25-26 kms/lr.will try to take the average again on my next trip next month to satara. if the all logan's are giving such a great average figures i can't understand why the car is not selling in numbers. | |

It must also be down to good driving lots of people think mif they drive slow and low revs they will get better results this is not true you need to get momentum som the car is in fact helping itself along with its own momentum and not just the power of the motor Great 4 ltrs per 100 kms is a nice payback Stu

| @mir, the numbers would come once they advertise the product..........i saw the last logan ad perhaps during the last 20-20 cup......or the days may be more.............
the main profit of a company comes from the engine of the product...since renault manufactures the engine and M&M imports it, so the profit margin of M&M reduces by a huge amount....... this is why logan is not so impressive.........

I would like to participate in one of them, will get to learn a lot by talking to other drivers .. Got a mileage of 15(DIS reading) today, but the engines making lot of noise .. theres a booming sound, being driven Maruti 800 i have a habit of changing gears hearing the engine boom and never have I changed gears above 2000 rpm in my Logan, so you can guess the sound that the engine is making ... I wonder whether my car would touch 3000 - 4000 rpms ever and speeds of 120, 140 kmph .. Is it common with 1.4 GLX or should i get it checked from my dealer. Following stu's advice on having a minimum threshold of 2000 rpm before changing gears, I found the noise boom to be louder and scary, also releasing the clutch at those rpms say 2500 would give a jerk when changing from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th, Is this common? Gosh!! its making me feel I am a bad driver ... And can anybody please confirm whether the power window and central locking switch remain warm even at chilling AC temperatures as my car is still getting hot after a drive .

| Just reset everything to zero and then run for 1 month then write down all your data in a little book or on your PC .....Mmm a spreadsheet would be nice then reset it for another month and do the same until you reach your 1000km run in period You will notice that you will reach a fixed fuel consumption which of course will get better on the open roads but will fall back in the towns .Dont worry to much about your fuel consumption the engine is made to use as little as possible and your bit of help is realy Mine is nearly always 7,4 ltrs and I dont zero it anymoreanyway you will notice a little Blip with the OBC (sometimes the little begger resets itself)spoiling your driving experience Like I say dont reset for 1 month then put down all your data on here for all to read Stu | |
