Iam owing a GLX 1.4 which is 3 months old. After 3 months i figured out that one of the tail lamps is having small white oval shape display on the left and the one on the right is RED. Looks wierd since u expect both of them to be same. At first i thought it to be a manutfacturing defect with my car but later after looking at some more pics on the net, i realized that all logans come that way. Does anyone hav an idea on why it is so ?

The white light is the back gear light, and the red one is the back fog light. The fog light really comes in handy when u back up in the dark. Now why Renault put only one back gear light might have many reasons..1) Might be because, we don't at all need two lights, the fog light can substitute for that, 2) because of cost cutting.
I don't have any problem with that except the fact that it looks assymetrical. But I don't know if other drivers can conceive whether I am backing up when they can see only the right rear tail light.

Well, I can only think of cost as the primary reason.

I have seen this on other cars like the Maruti SX4 etc.

I've read that there is a legislation on this in many places abroad - all cars must have at least 1 rear red fog lamp. When you switch on the front fog lamps, the rear fog lamp also lights up. As manufacturers look to cut cost, they take out a reverse lamp and put in a red fog lamp. Simple!

Since these cars are built to the same specs across the world, we have it in many cars that are being sold in India.

Is it so rojikunj? Does SX4 have only one back gear light? Just one correction for u, the rear for lamp lits up after u rotate the lever another time after u lit up the front fog lamp i.e if u switch on the rear fog lamp, the front will remain on..

Many cars have one rear fog light and one reverse light these days..
Logan is not the only one. Even the Accord, Honda City ZX and others
have these.. Guess this is a madate..

Ye, since these cars have clear lens lamps, one can't figure out quickly that there is only one back gear light.
And since our Logan's debut in India, it has faced the criticism (even from car experts) that Logan has one tail light. And comon people get caught in the wrong perception.

I have had relatives and friends tell me that one of the reversing lights is not functioning, that is when I have to repeat the entire story about cost and utility.

Quoting names of cars with similiar arrangement seems to get their approval.

The only thing that pisses me off is this:

WHY WHY WHY??

In fact many premium cars do not even have a rear fog lamp
Grrrr..
