PostSubject: Driver side front suspension cracking noise   Wed Dec 25, 2013 10:01 pm

Whenever i drove car in some pits and lands some sort of cracking noise arises from front suspension driver side and now I even get noise whenever I rotate my steering ... I first thought maybe water got into steering box but it's in opposite side front but sound comes from driver side .. When asked mechanic he says the whole arm and bearings with suspensions has to be changed because it comes as a full set and not as like in tata cars .. When enquired price it's nearly 12k .. I want to know what a real prob and any way to rectify cheaply

PostSubject: Re: Driver side front suspension cracking noise   Thu Dec 26, 2013 3:05 pm

Dear,
It doesn't comes as a one set always......
My self have purchased whole shock absorber assembly in spares from two diiferent suppliers. which saved my 12000 for LH & RH side. Whole 2 sets cost me Rs.9500/- .
By the way, take the car to the mechanic you trust & get the suspension & steering column checked up, the tie rod end bolt are bound to shear at our Indian roads. The sound may due to that.
Do you have a feeling while driving the car, that it feels, the front right side or front left side of the car is skidding......?

PostSubject: Re: Driver side front suspension cracking noise   Tue Mar 04, 2014 9:16 am

Hi, I am a new member and have brought an used 2008 LoGAN 1.4 GLE last month. This is my first car and I am able to drive only in the weekends. LOGAN is really a fantastic experience not only to me but my family members as well. The only problem that I am facing is while taking an  U-Turn or while steering full right side. The problem is on releasing the steering wheel from the full right position to the normal position a crackin / thud sound is comming out near the front wheel area. The sound is not there while taking normal right turns. There is a slight noise when the right wheel falls in any pits but on bumpers its fine. I did consult a local mecanic here in kolkata but his suggestion is to change the complete l&r axle arms and suspension repairing required and has given me an estimate of 10k.

I will like to get some suggestions as what needs to be done and how sooner. It will be kind enough if u could suggest me a proper mechanic in my area (if anyone from kol is there). my zip is 700063.

Thanks for your response Mr Martin. The problem is when i steer right ie in clockwise direction there is no sound. The clak clak sound happen when from full right i am steering left ie anticlockwise. Apart from that which driving in the there is so sound apart from a thud sound if the right wheel hits a pothole.

Just like to add that on higher speeds say 40 and above there is a bit of humming but it seems to be from the rear side ...

Hi, When you consulted the mechanic, was the car put on ramp and checked? The checking points would be Wheel side axle boot and transmission side axle boot. Oil or grease should not be visible around them. If transmission side axle boot has a problem, you will see oil drips around Trasmission side boot or axle. If there is a issue with Wheel side Axle boot , you may see some Grease around the boot. In both cases, individual Boots may need replacement. Individual Boot repair kits are available for Logan. About the Sound the car is making- Switch off the car. Push the car down using your body weight above the front wheel and see if same sound is coming. The part of the car you are pressing would go down, make that sound and come up again. Then, your shock aborbers would be just fine. It could be a Just a problem with Wishbone (mechanics call it as lower arm) and struts. How many kms has your Logan run. Hope this helps.

PostSubject: Re: Driver side front suspension cracking noise   Wed Mar 05, 2014 4:00 pm

Hi Shouvik,
This is in continuation of my earlier pot above-
The first sound you hear when turning your steering extreme right or left is usually from a damaged rubber CV boot on wheel side. So, it is important that the car is put on ramp and checked if there is grease leak from the Rubber CV Boot. Drive the car straight and you don't hear anything.
The second sound you hear when the car is going into a pothole and coming out is due to the wishbone/Struts wearout problem.
The first issue of sound during turning of steering to extreme left or right (may be a CV boot issue) requires immediate attention and putting the car on a ramp and looking from below will identify the broken / split / leaking CV rubber boot. Hope this helps. Let us know.

Well the CV boot wont make a noise but the joint will if the CV boot is ripped Or In your case in India eaten by rats and the grease will FLY out of the CV Joint and dry it Out ! Good info Prashant !!!! bounce  Send me per PM your email address I have a few Pdf files you may like to own ie Logan workshop Pdfs

Thanks for your prompt reply. I will check on with your suggestion and get back asap.

Prashant- The mechanic had just taken a round and advised me the same. The car was never put on a ramp. It has been driven close to 65000 kms.

Hi Shouvik,
Car has to be put on the ramp to see if the CV rubber boots (black color rubber spring like structure) is goodt on both sides of the car . If it has broken / split / cracked / eaten by rats , grease will leak out and the balls inside will start eating the grooves. This may cause the sounds when you are turning the steering to extreme ends and releasing back. This needs to be looked into with more attention because if the rubber boots have a issue then they need to be replaced. (boot Repair kits are available for Logan at nominal cost). For the other issue of sounds coming from front side when car goes into potholes, park the car on level ground and press the body of the car above the front wheel that is making the noise and push it down with your body weight. if the sound comes and the car rises up again, your shock absorbers are good, springs are good, the wishbone joint (arm) may be worn out or have a play. Single wishbone(arm) is available for replacement in Logan. Your comment that mechanic drove your car and then concluded that complete L & R arms needs to be replaced and suspension work needs to be done indicates that the mechanic has made a incorrect diagnostics of the root cause of this issue without looking at the bottom of the car. Try taking your car to a garage with ramp and put the car on the ramp, inspect the car from bottom & ask them what needs to be repaired.

Hello every one ,

Sorry had to leave town for a month so couldn't get back as promised. As per my previous problem regarding the sound - I visited a different mechanic along with the printouts provided by Mr Martin (thanks a ton Mr Martin). Now after putting the car on the ramp it was found that the CV rubber boots are fine and after inspecting the wishbone(arm) my mechanic concluded that no replacement is required for the next 25000 kms. The Front disk brake pads we worn out and had to be replaced. The rear right side wheel roller bearing was broken and had to be replaced. Now there is no humming sound and the right side clak clak sound has reduced. I took a test drive along with my cousins in mid march and it was a wonderful experience. On the highway i could barely hear any clak clak sound. The stability of the vehicle was awsome and the vehicle reached the highest speed of 140kmps with 6 people on board. Previously I had lot of other cars but never found one with such stability.

Well friends i need a little more help / information on the following :
1) What is the actual tank capacity and unsed fuel in the tank (My estimation is 40 lits but some are saying 50 lits)

2) When the fuel indicatior lamp glows - How many lits of petrol is still there - at time in my car even with 25 lts fuel intact the light glows on suddenly.

3) I was informed that logan has an option of total milage recorder on the instrumental panel - is the option available in 1.4 GLE - my vehicle gives me the option of odometer, trip meter and clock.

When my Lamp comes on I have 80kms of driving left ! the fuel tank holds 50ltrs and a bit more if you fill to the top of the pipe ! also do NOT fill up with the ignition turned on while it will not count the fuel going in
