Knocking sound from mid-left side while on bad roads .... ?

Hi All,

I have been experiencing a strange knocking sound (khat khat), not very loud but yes its on from last around couple of weeks.

This knocking sound comes only on bumpy roads and roads having small potholes and comes from mid-left side of engine, may be around left tyres and it feels like something is loose or rattlling, checked but couldnt find any such part.

What it could be? Its noticeable.

I know this sound silly But we have had this happen !Is it your bunch of Keys rattling on the ignition onto the dashboard . If not how many KM has your Logan traveled it could be a dome bearing ! That is the bearing at the TOP of the shock absorber with like a plastic black cap on it !Get someone to bounce on the front of the car and you take off the cap and feel the top it will move and crunch if it knackered

Its not keys I feel its the bearing as you said. I am attaching pic, let me know if you see anything unusual.

As much as I remember earlier there was no space between bearings and dome but now its there.

Also can I fix that .... I have tools etc or need to visit service center with hefty charges.

That's it like I said you can do this yourself but you will need a spring compresser

And if yes then what are the parts which needs replacement?

I visited a local garage and he checked suspension mountings and said OK, he also said the gap between bearing and dome is normal. What he detected is a play in left tie rod ball joint and said it needs to be replaced, but I am not convinced with the degree of play while moving tyres 3-9 position with hand. He also said iy might need replacement of tierod as well, if ball joints are fixed type.

I will visit another grage tomorrow and lets see what they say.

yours are up in the air all the time this is from the weight of the car pushing down and up on the bearing ! jack up the wheels and move the wheel up and down and you WILL here the noise you are looking for

I tried to do as film says but was unable to push up the tyres with jacks up, I tried using rod to push up but no success. So as discussed visited one more garage and mechanic removed tyres, un-bolted tie rod and lower arm ball joint.

As per them lower arm ball joint is making noise and suggested to change whole lower arm with tie rod and suspension mounting, made a budget of 10,000/-. I am still doubtfull and will visit service center in a couple of days to check their estimate.

The biggest problem with after market spares is they are not genuine in case of Logan, they either local made or imported from china. I am willing to give a luck with suspension mounting cup change and arm ball joint change.

Well just got new suspension mounting and bearings yesterday.

initially felt that problem is fixed but knocking started again today. Mechanic suggests to replace arm ball joints.

You ask what it can be I tell you and you just throw your money to the wind ! How can ball Joints cause the McPherson strut to rise out of it mountings !?? Carry on Mate ! I wish I was your Mechanic I could make a mint of you If its still knocking and rising it hasnt been tightened up properly

So finally ..... after wasting Rs. 1500 in suspension mounting and bearings problem has been solved after visitng service center. Culprit was Tie Rod and Engine Mounting which was causing knocking sound. Total repairing cost was Rs. 3500 and got old suspension mounting and bearings replaced back in Rs 300.

So if your car is making such sound and engine rattlling while picking up and low speeds, go and check for these parts.

I still cannot figure out though how that would make the dome bearing rise out of it mounting as in figure one ! It could have been a knock on effect then from the engine mountings (they dont often go wrong )

I got checked that too, some gap is normal but gap increases due to worn out suspension mounting. He was telling me to got that replaced too but a pair of that mounting was costing me Rs. 2000 and he showed me comparison between old and new mountings mine was about couple of mm's short, but thats OK and wasnt a matter of worry for now.

You may see cracking of walls around bigger iron ring in engine/gear mounting, its almost gone.

Also one warning for other Logan owners about never to try local made parts, most of them are imported from china and give a branding touch here, there are some companies like TALBROS who make Steering and Suspension parts and can be trusted because they supply parts to TATA, Maruti, Mahindra.
