This seems to be a bit costly affair. Can I request some expert here to let us know why timing belt cause so much damage?

Martin, i am ready to change the same, but the service adviser and the head mechanic at the workshop said no need to do it now, they inspected the timing belt and said its condition is good and they did not find any issues. So as of now they are not replacing the same and they confirmed that they have verified the condition which is good and i will not have any issues.

In my maruti models, the timing belt is replaced every 1,00,000 km! My logan 1.4 gls had done 74,000 km. Should I run and get the belt changed?
maybe for diesel engine the belt needs to be changed earlier. brrrr. I need to check for my maruti desire LDI, which has done 60,000 km.

What Zapping said is absolute CORRECT ! If your timing belt goes it is a Capital breakdown with the need of a new motor ! the water pump is a normal part of Timing belt change ! If you do not do it you will have the feeling that at any time it can go ! and if it does its Bye Bye Motor !
Hey Mate,
Can you let me know how many belts in total, need to be changed along with Timing belts change? I am expecting to spend a lot of money on the Logan as the AC has gone Kaput, Belts change is required and the Wiper arm has broken...
Peace, N

I was so stupid (it can't happen to me syndrome). I read this forum and knew that belt had to be changed and still ignored it. Today morning the belt snapped. leaving me stranded. All luck with me. The car was slow. The traffic was sparse. Had the car towed. Now am getting the belt changed, and as per recommendations of the group members, also the water pump. any other advice? the car has run 70,000 km.
thanks pankaj

No, it was fixed by a local mechanic, i am sure mahindra would have charged me atleast 4-5k more than what i had actully spent of fixes.

Two valves bent. head being opened. TRhe water pump looks good. My local mechanic says no need to change it. I too tried rotating the pump from the pulley, nice and smooth. But, am changing it, as per advice of forum members. Hopefully will get the parts today. Even the suspension is problematic. Some noise when it goes over potholes, which was different earlier. Wonder if it is good time to sell the car and buy new?

Same here - got the valves changed. Water Pump & Pistons were OK ... The positive thing was to have the whole thing decarbonized. The bill came to 32K. (my local mechanic).
Lesson: Change belt well before time. Mine failed at 67000Kms. Will change at 35000 kms next!

Hi Tomlai,
Can you share a breakup of the 32k? will be of much help to many on this thread. I guess since we all started out with our cars at the same time (about 5 yrs back), we will have many members who are nearing the phase of changing the timing belts.

Sorry guys don't have a breakup ... but know that there was replacement of timing belt kit, along with replacement of all valves, the head had to go for precision milling work to seat new valves. There was no replacement of cams, etc. Also I managed to get the work done in 3 days (which was a wonder in itself).
Mahindra Workshop (Mohan Motors) estimated 15 days to open up the engine and order and procure parts, and then 7 - 10 days more to do the work. Their quote was a conservative 40000 - 45000.
