| There are differences in the way any oil within its segment is projected in market. I guess for passenger cars any oil would do as far as it meets the minimum standards. Be it Castrol or Elf. | |

| Hi,
I have been using Castrol GTX Magnatec for some time and found the same better than the engine oil provided by the workshop. Once you move from the Mahindra engine oil to Castrol you will feel a difference in the engine behavior. It becomes more refined and smooth. May be because GTX Magnatec is of 10W-40 grade whereas the Mahindra engine oil is 20W-40 grade. But the price of GTX magnatec is around Rs 950/- which is higher compared to the Mihindra one.
However, these are entirely my observations. Please validate yourself prior to using the same.

Hi The grades are for colder climates Look Here Oil Technology In cold weather, it is beneficial to use an oil that has good cold start flow properties as it will get to the parts of the engine that need it far more quickly. The "w" number which means winter is the key here and the lower the better. It may seem odd but a 15w or 20w will struggle to get around the engine in very cold temps and I would strongly recommend a 10w or better still a 5w for better cold start performance in the winter. 90% of all engine wear occurs on cold start because the oil gets thicker the colder it is - which causes engine wear. These numbers explain it and bear in mind that the oil will be the following thickness at 100degC (sae 40 = 14cst, sae 50 = 18cst and sae 60 = 24cst) At 0degC these are the numbers (thick!) Grade | 0C | 10C | 100C | 0W/20 | 328.6cSt | 180.8cSt | 9cSt | 5W/40 | 811.4cSt | 421.4cSt | 14cSt | 10W/50 | 1039cSt | 538.9cSt | 18cSt | 15W/50 | 1376cSt | 674.7cSt | 18cSt | 20W/50 | 2305cSt | 1015cSt | 18cSt |
I hope this helps you a bit Today we have -13C and the car starts ok

| Please stick with the oil they use at the authorized service center. Don't worry about the viscosity. They would have tested the oil thoroughly. 'Elf' is a good brand. | |

| Hi Martin,
Thanks a lot for the information. I really appreciate and respect your knowledge in this regard.Compared to you, I am really a novice.
Whatever I have mentioned is not any fantasy of mine, these are observations of driving over a few thousand of Km's on both highway as well as in city.
As far as my knowledge goes, a lower 1st value indicates better oil flow. This is especially helpful in a cold morning start as it provides better engine protection. However, a better oil flow also ensures better fuel consumption. However, NA engines cannot use too thick oil and turbocharged engine cannot use too thin oil. So, there are different grades of oil for different types of engines.
A 20W-50 grade oil is normally mineral based, 10W-40 is semi synthetic based, whereas 5W-40 is fully synthetic based.Synthetic oils has the ability to remain stable at high temperatures and remain fluid at low temperatures. This provides optimum lubrication at extreme temperatures, reducing wear for a more cleaner engine. This is due to fact that they possess viscosity characteristics superior than those of a mineral oil and at the same time has molecular structure that meet and often exceeds' manufactures criteria for high performance cars.
As performance is not a copyright of F1 cars, so I think there is no harm in using a better engine oil for street cars for better performance and longer engine life.
Just for your information, the first Multi Grade engine oil to be introduced is Castrol GTX Magnatec.
Please accept my sincere apologies if I have offended you in any way. But I would also request you to please consider the fact that this is a public forum, so please be a bit more polite in your replies.
With Regards, Kaustuv | |

| I feel Castrol Magnatec Synthetic is better choice than Mahindra Maximile Ordinary 20w40. More on Castrol Magnatec is here - http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectiongenericarticle.do?categoryId=8274016&contentId=7037323 Is any one using Magnatec? (It can be used for both petrol and diesel cars). Also what you use to flush engine oils? | |

| If you want to flush clean an engine just fill with any cheapo oil and drive till warm and then drain and change the filter
I am not saying that Castrol is no good you guys I am just saying that the Elf which is recomended for the Logan is good enough .It does not bring anything to use a High Quality oil in a mid quality car .Unless of course you get Temp like we have been having and thats was last night in Germany -30 deg that is 10 W 40 oil The main thing in upholding the life on your motor is this ! Change the oil at the correct Oil change times stated in your handbook and change the filter as well this is something you can do yourself .....and while you are at it stick your finger in the filler plug of the Gearbox and check its ok as well I hope I have offended no one with this answer and if I did .....Tough

| Hi,
I have found good results with Castrol GTX Magnatec. I have also verified the same with some of my friends having Esteem and Accent and they have also confirmed the same. However, the life of GTX Magnatec is around 7000 Kms. So the replacement is relatively frequent. I have heard that Motul or Mobil 1 are better and at the same time it will last for 10000 to 15000 Kms. However, the cost of the same will be above Rs 2000/- whereas that for Magnatec is around Rs 950/- and the cost of oil filter is Rs 110/-. So you can evaluate and find out the better option. I have not used Motul or Mobil 1 as of now but I am planning to shift to the same shortly. Do try to get good information on the same before using it.
Regarding the engine flushing, the same can be done at the service center. They use a liquid for the same. The cost of the same will be around Rs 400/- as far as I can remember.
Regards,
Kaustuv | |

| if one uses oil other than maximile is that covered under warranty. service center refused saying, use at your own peril. if somehting goes wrong they are not legally bound to perform the replace. though i was never planning to go for my own oil, i just wanted to enquire. | |

| It goes without saying that the warranty will be void if one uses an oil not recommended by the manufacturer. As Stu mentioned earlier this car is not high on performance and as such any investment in oils costing more is not worth it. The oil that is recommended by the manufacturer will do its job. Yes, oil grades may vary across countries due to climate extremes. | |

| Hi,
I have been using Castrol for quite some time and never had any issues with the warranty. In fact, at the time of service, I provide the service center guys with the engine oil myself. I don't think there should be any issues with the engine oil manufacturer, the only point being the grade of oil being used.

| Hi,
I have once seem an FAQ type of handout in the service center regarding Logan where it was mentioned that it is not recommended to use any type of additives in petrol. Also they have recommended to use high octane fuels, not for better mileage but for better engine life.

| I was talking about OIL additives You should also use unleaded fuel because this is what this engine is made for and if you have catalisator you MUST not you leaded fuel because after only 10km your Cat is wrecked
