| Hi Friends, I just completed 1 year ( 15500 KMS) in my DLS Diesel Logan, Gave it for the 3rd service yesterday . I had complained that there is a cranking sound when brakes are applied . As we all know that this is a ongoing issue in logan . Now the service guy tells me that because of brake pad fault the sound occurs. He is charging me 1800/- for that .. Please advice friends | |

| Hi Sabrish, I had the same problem too. I complained of a slight braking inefficiency and then they said that brake pads had worn out. The mechanic said that it could do another 3000 kms but suggested that its better I change it. I did because I had no way of inspecting the damage, beucase the workshop is a godd 35 kms from my house. And moreover, since it was the brake, i asked him to replace it. In your case, if its only the noise (I still get this while bringing the car to halt at slow speeds), I suggest you need not get it changed. However, I request other members to comment on general brake pad life. | |

| At 20000Kms they replaced my brake pads. The Service Advisor explained that brake pads have to be replaced every 20000kms. A colleague who was advised the same didn't replace but after covering a distance of 500kms-1000kms he noticed a drop in the braking efficiency. He replaced the brake pads. | |

| Your right Hitesh. Thats exactly what happened. I did not have much problem but just felt that the brake needed a check. I told them this and ended up replacing the brake pads. | |

Bang on Stuart, Driving in Metros like Mumbai in India is mostly stop and go kind. Which is exactly why the brake pads get worn out soon. Also, i suspect bad driving habits. Many here, tend to let the car go in Neutral and use the brakes extensively to control the car on slopes and other roads where possible. This, along with being extremely dangerous, is also bad for the brake pads. So also watch out for the driving technique. I have also observed, in India, due to waterlogging in many areas we drive, the brake pads tend to collect dirt and rust as well, a clean up at the service center could also lead to better braking..

| Hi, I have driven 30,000 + and got my brake pad checked during the last servicing. The service advisor there told me that it will go for another 5000 Kms. But I need to get the brake pads cleaned frequently due to dust accumulation which results in noise at the time of applying the brakes. With Regards, Kaustuv Goswami. | |

| I am finding a strange issue in my car, whenever i go for a long trip and head back, the brake oil reduces, the service center tops it up , checks for leakages and then says everything is good to go.
Happened last year on the trip to Coorg, same thing repeated this year on my trip to Munnar last week.
Not able to understand what the problem is and then in the end the service center says that u should change break pads at 20,000 kms.
I told them i don't break much and i am a slow driver, so they should physically check the break pads rather than just recommending to change it at 20,000 kms

Besides, the brakes seem to have lost the bite....It doesnt slow down with half push and comes to an immediate halt after that.......Very scary.....I shall be getting it checked and cleaned this weekend......hopefully it doesnt need a pad change........ | Take off the back wheels and check for Oil leakage in the Brake drums This is important so do it today your oil can only go down when it is either leaking or the Pads are so far down but with 20000 you are ok Mmmmm we are talking miles here arnt we ? Ok If no Oil is on the brake drums the Pads at the front are worn out

My car's done 20000+ till now and i also havent replaced my brake pads so far. If you highlight it as a concern, they are probably going to use that as a reason for the change. Ok, my cars just gone in for the free service campaign organised by my dealer. Since about last 1000kms there was a squealing noise from the front brakes, when applied at speeds below 5kmph. Service advisor told me that the pads will need replacement as thay are wornout at the edges, something which is likely to happen in city driving. When I asked him why it needs to be changed and not just cleaned, he said, "Sir, the average change time for brake pads in bangalore city is seento be @ 18000kms. If the noise were to be ignore till the next service, given the type of city driving we have, it could affect hte disc itself, which would set me back a cool 4000/-. He actually got one of the brake pads removed to confirm that there indeed was wear-out at the edges. Since my next service comes up only after another 5000 kms or 6 months minimum, i decided to get them changed. So a set of 4 pads was what it was going to cost me (Rs. 1800/-)

| That looks ok to me I have just googled this info -------------------------------------------------- It’s important to note that there are two ways to determine whether or not the pads will need replacing:
The first is visually. If you see that the depth of the pad is less that 1/4 inch. You need to replace it, and soon! If you see that it’s less than 1/8 inch, there isn’t any time to waste as you are getting really close on damaging the rotor. You need to then do it ASAP! It’s not the same on every vehicle, but use it to help you along.
The second is by ear. If you are hearing a screeching sound when you put your foot on the break. Not good. You are overdue for a reline. But, if it sounds more like scraping on metal, then I’m afraid you have damaged your [color:45c1=#000088 !important][color:45c1=#000088 !important]rotors and you need to fix the brakes immediately otherwise you could cause major damage.
Changing your brake pads too soon is much better than changing them too late. That way you will avoid more expensive repairs as well as unsafe driving. Yours look like you have a full half inch ! Cheep pads make noises and every morning after rain or Dew the disks will have rust on them and you will hear this getting rubbed off for the first few miles

| I just saw one of the pads in my replaced set and it looks like this. The other 3 pads seem to be ok. Service advisor says that the vehicle would come in for service after 10000kms again and the pads had about 1000 kms or so left in them. Hence he suggested to replace them. Also, the squealing noise was coming fromthe brakes, so I went in for the replacement. I havent thrown away my pads yed. keeping them. | |
