PostSubject: Logan Gear Knob Replacement    Fri Aug 12, 2011 1:44 am

Guys,
My Gear Knob was broken. Weird Yes, but true. Even the Mahindra Service guys were shocked to see the state. Claimed they had never seen such damage before. Dont really know how it happened, my little brother to blame here. But anyways, fired up a few of my sources in Mahindra and got hold of the Gear Knob at home thinking it'll be a normal unscrew and screw procedure (and i could save labour and other charges just for that). To my plight, it didnt turn out to be so simple!!! In pictures below, trying to post how i did it.

Lift the Leather Neck to reveal the Black Tie plastic lock as in the picture. Cut it.

Try to Rotate and Pull out the Old Gear Knob now. This is where it screwed it up for me, the internal plastic was broken so please proceed at your own risk. My View is that the Plastic inside that locks the Gear knob in place is a little difficult to remove without breaking it!!

Now the New Gear Knob

Attaching the New Gear Knob with the Gear Leather Neck. I used a metal wire instead of the Plastic Tie. Didnt have a new one handy Wink The wire worked fine.

Here is the problem, 1st image below is the Old (Broken) Gear knob that was somehow removed and 2nd is the new one. Inside the 1st one, you can see the plastic part that stays stuck inside. What I had to do to remove it was cut the broken OLD gear knob and retrive the plastic form inside it. It is actually like a cap on a pen. Stays on the Metal Gear that can be seen in the above pictures.

I stuck that plastic cap over the metal gear rod with a Super Glue (Feviquick). And just slipped the New Gear Knob over it, it ideally locks on its own.

Like I said earlier, this is a Crude and Novice method and I dont think is the recommended method. This by the way are the steps that I took while getting my Gear Knob changed. Somehow am sure that there is a more cleaner and professional method of changing the same.

Some real hard driving Saumil?

Rs. 1201/- for the knob?

Why did you not try any other knob in the market available from Rs. 500/- onwards?Ofcourse, you would have had to accomodate the pvc trim by some other means

Yea.. Really mate.. Unbelievable damage.. Brother says he also doesnt know how it happened so its a mystery for now..
Replacing it by an aftermarket was a thought earlier but the PVC trim as you call it and also a thought that majorly other knobs came with a thread screw system unlike our Logan. So thought of replacing it with the Stock one, just got the one with the chrome thing. Mine was plane gray as in all DLE/GLE's.

My Logan's gear lever also broken. I think there is no specific reason for damage. It broken at 4th year. Anyway,I have replaced it at TVS in Thiruvananthapuram and the cost is Rs.1610. I am very sure that the maintenance cost is very higher. The 4th year service cost is Rs.24000.

Hi Saumil,

Can you give me the name of dealer for the gear knob. I too have fallen into the "broken gear knob predicament". The authorized workshop has asked for Rs. 3000/- replacement fee. Evil or Very Mad

Any contact would be much appreciated!!!

They will never give you the Knob like they gave me. You could still try at NBS. Try an aftermarket one!

Well , Addition to all of you above,

I also noticed my gear knob is cracked . Let see I'try to glue i with fevistick & see what happens.

Actually the recycled PVC & vibrations in the knob may be a cause for breaking these knobs.

By the way Stu.

You german people are more powerful, though you are not breaking any thing. How come that?

ha ha cheers

In the meantime if you want you can keep a lookout for aftermarket replacements. The issue is all universal ones available comes with screw. But for Logan its sieve. You can just pull it out. Don't twist and pull like how Sumil has mentioned above. Or maybe if you twist and pull like how he has mentioned the sieve on the gear lever will also come out and you can screw in a aftermarket universal knob. For Rs 500/- you get really classy and royal ones like these

Hi i bought a gear knob for zen. broke the remaining pieces of the renault knob. refixed the hood using a new cable tie over the notch in the zen knob. also used silicon before i slid the knob over the gear lever. back goes the clip on the hood.
works beautifully. gear knob is a little smaller than before and is greyish in color. but i am happy that i saved some dough. all of rs. 130/ for knob, a small silicon tube and a cable tie ( which you get with for binding cords of all electronic equipment newly shipped. ) you can try this if you want. you may even opt for a wooden gear knob ( the ones which were rage when premier padminis ruled the road) doesnt cost must and i am sure 'll last more than the stock renault one.

After market ones generally won't fit for logan as they are all screw type and logan has a slide-in-sieve  type one. But logans will cost you around rs3000. To fit in the after market ones you might have to get the sieve on the gear lever also removed. I replace mine with a logan type from aftermarket but that too was Rs2800 something. If you can adjust one with an aftermarket one then that is better. You will get really royal looking ones for Rs500.

Thanks for the info, just got a call from the service center and they said no stock for gear knobs. For some of the other logans they have ordered the knob for the latest Logan, but that is not fitting on the older model of Logan, so they need to order both the knob and gear lever . For now they will be using fevi quick to fix the knob. Also the service adviser recommended to put a leather cover that way it would last longer.

try the old zen knob. it works well. just slide it over , attach the leather hood with a cable tie, and use silicon or something before sliding it.
the dia is same 12mm round bar , fits it.

Mine too cracked because of heat, seems like a quality issue. There are fancy universal gear knobs available like skull, cobra, GT & many types with glowing LED's which will fit perfectly. These gear knobs cost between 500 to 2000INR available in ebay & car accessory outlets. These knobs comes with 3 allen key screws and a sleeve for different dia's of gear rods but may have to tie the top end of the synthetic hood with a black cable tie, can be done in few mins. I have fitted one, looks & works great.
