PostSubject: 2007- 1.6 GLS experience   Sun May 15, 2011 11:07 pm

Hi,
I started using my sister's logan last oct. the odometer was 8100 km then. The vehicle was sitting idle in her garage for almost 3 yrs. It is a 2007 oct model with 1.6 k7m renault motor, was the topend variant then with ABS and driver side airbag.
I was recovering from a disc prolapse and neede a softer ride. My other vehicle being a Tata Safari SUV.
Since my running was about 1750 km / month i decided to opt for retrofitting a CNG kit with a 16 kg tank which sits in the boot between the rear strut well easily still leaving substantial space for luggage if not large suitcases.
Kit selected was an open loop Lovato with TAP module.
The vehicle was giving a city FE of 10 kmpl. After CNG it jumPed to 15 +. Felt a little sluggish initially as compared to petrol, but the extra torque of the 1.6 helped a great deal.
Now feels QUITE smooth. tHE ULTRA HIGH OCTANE rating of cng means the car never knocks.
have done 10500 km since then on cng. Saved a bunch in fuel money.
cng costs Rs.31.87/kg in Navi mumbai and after last night's fuel price hike petrol Is. in excess of 67/-lit.
I service the car at my trusted mechanic.
Manindra service stations never seem to have spares.
The biggest issue with logan in india is spares are just not avaialble in local market. Not even service parts like oil filter , air filter of the 1.6.
the vehicle has a very cushy ride , handles very well and the engine feels quite refined being fuel effecient at the same time.
The palstic trims used inside are as poor quality as last gen. tata vehicles. Quite a few things squeak , creak , purrrrr and its irritating with a car which is hardly used and used so carefully , which is maintained very well.
I also had to replace the high tension coil ( ignition coil ) which is sourced from renualt made in france.
It was not available anywhere outside even in Opera house.
Of the 7/8 service outlets of M & M , luckily one in Thane had the part in stock. Cost 3440/- with installation. ( It was 2009 manufactured ) The new price is Rs4500/-
Thats expensive. I also have a gear lash noise on idle . Very common in tata vehicles Sad Irritating. Changed gear oil but its still there ,. BTW 85w-90 oil is too thick for this gera box. I changed to this oil and had to drain it and put Mobil ATF 220 auto tranmission oil as it became difficult to slot gears after the oil change. Now better witht the thinner oil but the lash still audible.
Other than that every time the car would go over a bump / pothole / speed braker slowly, the rubber bush over the strut would make grrrrrk kind of sound. If you simply push the bush down and spray some oil / wd40 , the sound would go away for some time and then resurface. I believe the bush and plastic bush has become hard because of less use ( 8000km in 3 yrs. ) and if i need to get rid of this sound i need to replace.
I am afraid its expensive and not available ( even at A.S.S. )
Switching to CNG IS SAVING me good money and the vehicle is well engineered otherwiseto last long.
But the poor quality mahindra service and lack of commercial success of the vehicle in india has made long term ownership of the this car difficult in my opinion.
Pity really as it is way better than its competitors in the same segment.
Now mahindra seems to have put the finallly put the final nail in the coffin by launching the logan again and pricing it way too high.

Anyway-
My vehicle has undergone following expenses apart from the regular service.
1) Battery change @ 8100km - Rs.3600/- tata green
2) Ignition coil- @ 18500 km - Rs. 3440/- renault
3) Hazard light switch -@ 13500km -Rs. 690/- renault
4) spark plugs- @ 11900km - Rs.400/- for 4 make denso pkr20
5) spark plugs @ 18500 km - Rs.400/- "
6) Lovato CNG kit w 16 kg tank retrofitting with RTO & insurance endorsement - Rs. 32500/-

latest casualty seems to an idle control actuator ( throttle sensor valve ). Car vibrates a bit on idle . like when driving upto a signal after a fast run, the motor may just die on you. Also vibrates even after clutching in gear at slower speeds and also in neutral. normal behavior in speed.
Supposed to cost in the range of 5000/ 6500 INR.
Not even available at MASS. They have to order.

If the noise while going over bumps is from the rear suspension, then it could be the Brake Force compensator, at the center of the real suspension.

It may need some lubrication or replacement.
i had the same problem.. it took them several months and at least 5 attampts to locate the source... it's solved now though.

Well it did help. GEARS are slotting well or better now.
I got the oil changed in the first place for the lash noise. I changed first to a veedol 85w-90. ( 3 lit. came out so i put in 3 lit. )
Slotting gears first up in the morning suddenly became difficult ( very hard ). After driving a bit ( i suppose on heating up of the oil ) it used to would slot a little better. But not at as good as before the oil change.
On enquiring with a authorised service station, i was told that Renault is using Elf brand gear oil 75w-80.
This grade is not available in market. Too thin.
so i substituted with the Mobil atf 220.
I would like to know a better option.
we have
1) 85W-90HP /EP
2) EP90
3) TQ
4) ATF
available here in india. But nothing thinner.
Is using a auto transmission /TQ going to adversely affect my gear box.?

I would not use ATF in my gearbox I would use a branded gearbox oil (I love my Gearbox)

Do you mean ' renault specified ' oil by 'branded gear oil' ? I used MOBIL make ATF220.
Do you mean AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID is not good for a manual transmission of logan ?
Or you mean MOBIL ATF 220 is not correct for a manual gearbox.
I did use a branded gearbox 85w-90 oil first.
Shall appreciate some clarity.
I too love my gearbox. Smile

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
IS MADE FOR WHAT IT SAYS ISNT IT !
and no I do not mean Renault oil Just buy a good oil from a handler with a name ie Elf or Mobile etc
MOBIL ATF 220 is ok for "SOME" gearboxes but is that ours as well ???
I would drain the ATF out and use a good oil ! How about a tin of mollycote in it for good measure
