PostSubject: Beige dashboard - Glare in bright sunlight   Fri Apr 04, 2008 6:15 pm

The beige coloured dashboard may look premium, but it is causing a problem in that when bright direct sunlight hits the dashboard, sunlight is reflected onto the inside surface of the windscreen and causes severe glare, this causes a problem if you are driving into a shadow area, you cannot see a thing.

Also along tree lined roads, intermittent sunlight hits the dashboard causing a kind of strobe effect on the windscreen.

I am thinking of covering the dashboard with a matt black cover to control this. I have never faced this in my earlier vehicles with dark grey/black dashboards.

What do all of you think of this issue?

I will try and post a picture of what I am talking about when I get some time this weekend ...

Tomlai - what a coincidence. I also had the problem and am thinking about having a cover for it. I di look around a few places. I am posting a picture of a similar cover for another vehicle (not Logan) on the gallery section for the benefit of others. This stuff is available in many colours and materials and can match the seat fabrics. Do post pics if you get one done for your Logan

Although I've not faced this problem ever (perhaps the eye level/ sitting angle is different). And I'm not in favour of a dashboard cover, cuz it looks damn ugly!
If you really want to do something, get the top end painted black.

For example.. following is the Ford Fusion's dash:

It will surely be more expensive and time consuming than a cover. But it will be worth it.

I'm planning to do the same, but there other things I want to do first. Will get it done some day.

I too never noticed/faced any problem, I am 5.10'', may be its the angle which is causing glare.

Although people who are thinking to get paint the dash, my suggesstion is to contact only Logan body shop, coz Logan dash assembly is damn complecated.

Yep, getting the job done from any other than a qualified person, will ruin the job. The paint will peel off in a few months!

I am facing the same problem. Its really annoying and is a basic design defect. One would expect Logan folks to have figured out this. Has any one got the cover paint done and the problem fixed??? Also wont painiting in black spoil the inner ambience of the vehicle...Alos whats the cost of the cover for Logan..

Never faced any such problem. Infact i adore the beige dashboard.
Neways, for others who are facing a problem as such, i guess u should get a Sunfilm installed on the windscreen, this will also assist in better cooling of the Aircon and reduce the heat intake on the whole. I have a FILMPRO-70 i guess. Surprised

PostSubject: VEILING GLARE : DESIGN FLAW or MANUFACTURING DEFECT?   Sun Aug 31, 2008 7:52 pm

Again, bringing up the topic of a dashboard cover for the Logan.

The pix simply shows how dangerous the reflection is ... especially if you are trying to look in a direction where there is a deep shadow, then the reflection off the dashboard on the windscreen is far far brighter than the outside view.

The problem is called veiling glare ... and is an important factor in the safety feature of a car.

In their hurried effort to "upgrade" the interior of the vehicle from grey to beige, this important factor of driving safety has been simply ignored.

Also it is not a function of whether there is a sunfilm on the windshield (which is fitted in my Logan already), but that the light beige dash reflects too much light off the inside of the windshield.

What I am trying to get at is that Mahindra Renault should offer a dark grey dash/dash cover to owners who wish to change the dashboard.

The glare exists in my case too. But this is a problem with many other cars also (to a vrying degree depending on windscreen rake angle and the colour of the dash.)

You can experience the same in OMNI also !! (Just for an example)

Elegant (Seat Covers manufacturers) makes good dashboard covers.

However, these products always endup looking shoddy and garish.

I faced this prob in my maruti 800. But in Logan nothing of this sort dude. But I am quite amazed that why is all the people no experiencing the same prob. As I can gues Tom took the pic from level a bit below the normal eye level during driving. Otherwise this is really dangerous man.

Tom I agree with you totally, the glare from the beige dashboard do cause a visibility problem and if not careful may lead to accidents.
As for people not experiencing the same, you are fortunate for whatever reason, but do be careful while driving in harsh sunlight.
Even I am thinking of getting dashboard cover.

Nayandeep: No, the camera was resting on the co-driver headrest ... which is exactly where most evelevels would be.

Kolkata Lonagites: Drive in the late morning or early afternoon along Southern Avenue with the sun hitting the road through the trees. The view outside would alternate between clear view to absolutely white-out invisible, almost like a stroboscopic effect.

dont know about the glare....
i bought it in dec 2008. its beige and black....
i havent noticed any glare so far.

beige gives me comfortable classy feeling interiors.
persoanlly i feel lighter colors give me a soothing feeling of more space and freedom, and this is what matters me the most when in the cabin as this is where i will spend my time with car.

i dont prefer all in all black colored interiors...

now getting back to reason behind most or nearly all cars having black color interiors, specially the dash board.

black color does not reflect any color and hence if deployed on dashboard will absorb all frequencies eliminating even the slightest of glare.

having said this i think the glare effect with beige dashboard will be felt the most in cars with color least dark.

so a white car with beige dashboard is likely to get most glare
and
a black car with beige dashboard is likely to get least

colors on bonnet and dashboard will compensate each other visually within drivers eye.

may be this is a reason why i did not feel the glare so far. however i am not sure if this is true...

I too have experienced the glare, but luckily for me the new version of logan comes with a black driverside dash (the buldge above the steering mount), which gives me a clear view from the driver side, but if i have to look on the left side the glare causes a problem. Also since my AC Fascia is silver the light reflected from the leftmost vent reflects onto the left window (if they are closed) causing severe glare while looking on the left rear view mirror (this happens even at nights due to street lights).

Another problem is the C pillar, my daily commute is via a 6 lane highway wherein driving discipline is pathetic, when entering into the highway (to join the lane on the opposite side) the C pillar being broad blocks my vision completely, the lrvm cannot be trusted as there is indisciplined driving in high speeds. Also there are no signals on the junction, its wait watch and proceed. Well nothing can be done of the C pillars, but hope in the newer versions mahindra/dacia reduces its size which would inturn help reduce the boxy looks near the rear window.

Wow this is cool Smile .. thanks stu .. I was thinking of fixing small mirrors (similar in size) on the windscreen from inside on both the top corners (giving view in the opposite direction), so that the blind spots are reduced. Will check its availability in the local market as I have not seen any cars with these mirrors. Suv's over here affix small mirrors on the bonnet to reduce the blind spot, but those would look horrible in a Logan

They call them as magic view mirror 2 sizes and cost about Rs.42/- & Rs. 65/- per peice.
