| I have a Logan Diesel. Its 3 yrs old and has done 22000 Kms. Recently after driving through water logged streets i am getting grinding noise when applying brakes which started with light squealing initially. I have stopped driving it now and will be taking it for service and check up this weekend. I a m worried about the extent of damage and what all should be done on the car? Please advise and can anyone help me out with the cost of break pads, rotor changes etc.? | |

| Hi kalim, Welcome to the forum. My Logan 1.5 DLX also gave me some noises like creaking at around 24000kms. The service center guys replaced the brake pads at that time. What I found was that one of the brake pads had worn out unevenly which apparently was causing the noise due to point contact. Read this complete post below and you'll know what to expect Faulty Brake Pads | |

| I think I paid a total of 1500-1600/- something for a set of brake pads. Am not sure about the cost of a rotor though. | |

| Before you go out and buy new brakes and discs take the car out and do a few emergency stops take it up to about 30 kmh and slam on the brakes and do the same in reverse I suspect this is rust on the discs which happens on all cars it turns up in a few hours and is loud for the first few uses give it a try and get back to us on this one
from the net • Grinding noise — This noise is common primarily during the first few stops on rear drum brakes and on some front disc brakes due to the formation of trace corrosion if the vehicle has not been driven recently. If the noise disappears after a few stops, it does not indicate a problem.
My Logan has done now 50000 kms with the original pads and discs so dont let anyone con you into buying new ones | |

| Thank you all for taking time to reply. . Actually the Brake discs had big scratches and was completely worn (scrapped) out along with brake pads (they had turned completely flat). I examined the break discs before changing them. Cost: brake pads - 1680 and Brake discs 2560 plus labor extra. I guess how you drive and brake plays a big part it this and for a speed freak like me it not surprising. Guess need a different car for my speed needs and i need to handle this one more like a gentleman as it appears to be delicate. But Mahindra seriously need to rethink its dealer startegy in Hyderabad with only one dealer its a complete monopoly here. I had another bad experience with Automotive Motors. They did not have stock of spares. They gave Brake discs from another car and promised to replace with new ones once they get the new ones ( i have not paid for the used ones). But the whole experience was bad. First thing they tell you is "Sir Aaj Nahin Hoga" (Today we can not do it) even though you have taken appointment 1 week before. Imagine Logan had a sales target of 50K they are not even selling 10K and still service is bad. Imagine what will happen if they met their targets. It will be a complete chaos. Its a circus being run by a bunch of idiots. Shame on AML Hyderabad. | |

| Last time they replaced the brake shoes I handed them the first set that I had kept safely. They had replaced the first set at 20000kms. They did it as preventive measure. They were planning to replace it at the 50000kms service. But they decided it can run another 5000kms. So, in total the first set of brake pads will have run 30000kms. Lets see if after 5000kms if they really need to replace it. If not then it would have run 35000kms. | |

| Today I replaced brake pads from Car Care center (Opp to AVM studio), Vadapalani , Chennai. Cost of Brake pad was 850 Rs - Bosch Brand Cost of Replacing and cleaning front Brake pads 250 Rs Cost of Cleaning rear drums 300 Rs - Donno why rear drum cleaning is costing more than front brake pad replacement. Total 1400 Rs But now the braking is still not effective Will new brakes not be effective? I will be going on a 3000+ km drive, so please advise. | |

| What do you mean by not effective ? Turn off the motor pump the brake pedal a few times .......... Now Place your foot on the brake pedal and press hard keep your foot on the brake and START THE ENGINE you should feel the brake pedal slowly go down This is a test for the brake Servo ! New Brakes should not be used hard for at least 100 km (IF POSSIBLE ) they also need to wear into the discs ! How many KMs have the Discs done ! ???? I changed mine at 55000 and that was a bit late !I could see how worn they where when I removed them Discs are so cheap it is always better to replace the discs and Pads

| Did you look at the old disks ? you would have been able to feel grooves where water gets between and stops the brake power and also the amount of rotting metal (Flakes of rust) on them

| Didn't find any rust. Also, visually there didn't appear to be grooves, just smmoth surface though there was a prominent 'lip' to the edge of the disk. | |
