PostSubject: alignment problem or other need suggestions   Fri Oct 30, 2009 12:29 pm

Hello,
I own a DLE 1.5 .The car has got fitted with alloy wheels(plati) and company tyre.I have observed the car while running goes towards the left side of the road if you take the hand of t he steering wheel on plain road .I do not see a wear and tear on the tyres indicating a wheel alignment problem..I have given it for Service in Mahindra SMS workshop in bangalore 2wice and once to private guy .IN all the 3 cases they said it got fixed and problem seem to go aways but it will be back to me with 2 - 4 weeks of service ..I am wondering what could be causing this ..Any opinion and suggestion are welcome ..doe any one have a similar issue .please help out

One indication of an out-of-alignment condition is a car that continuously drifts or pulls to one side of the road when you let go of the wheel.
A car that is hard to keep in a straight line without constant steering corrections is also a candidate.
These conditions may or may not also contribute to premature tire wear.

After the wheel alignment is finished, you should drive the car on a straight and level road and check that the car goes straight and that the steering wheel is in the proper position with the spokes level.
If you notice a problem, take the car back and have the technician drive it and fine-tune the alignment settings.

On what roads are you testing this? Is it slight or is there a significant drift?

On normal 4 lane highways, you have to drive close to the central median and then see if it still drifts to the left.

My car drifts very slightly if I drive on the left side of a 4 lane road but not if I drive next to the central median. The left side of the road has a slope.

The same happened to me also. Even after repeated alignment the problem stays. I was told by one technician (who previously used to work in Mahindra workshop) that its the problem with JK Tyre Vectra that comes with Logan. In fact SX4 also has this same problem since they also come with JK Tyre Vectra.

well in case if it is not bothering you much you may want to leave it aside.

i got mine aligned. however after alignment the steering wheel spoke is not straight and at the same time the wheels are on straight line. the spoke is a little towards one side to be specific steering remains tilted slightly towards right instead of precise center position. will try to post a pic of same to provide better idea.
i do not know the reason for this or even cant comment whether it is rightly done or not. according to them it is done rightly. i left it there.

Hi,

You can take your car to an empty stretch of plain road and while driving straight just leave the steering and observe the drift. Unless or otherwise there is any undulations in the road, the car should continue to move straight for quite some time. If the same is not happening, then there is a problem with the wheel alignment. What I would suggest, you get both the wheel balancing as well as the alignment done. Also, be at the place where the alignment is done and observe whether all the readings shown in the computer screen are green after the work is done.

Some time before, I was also facing the same problem. Even after repeated alignment and balancing, still there was problem. Finally, the service center guys identified a problem with one of the wheel bearing and got the same replaced under warranty. After that, the car is running fine.

With Regards,

Kaustuv Goswami.

Another thing is if it pulls right drive for a bit and then feel the right Disk if it is HOTTER than the right this could be your problem ! a sticking brake

If the wheels are not balanced you will feel wheel wobble at about 110 going away again at 125 kmh

This is how the steering has to be for vehicle to move in straight line. If you notice the steering seems to be a bit tilted. Well at least to me it looks tilted on axis as shown. It is not on the vertical line axis.

In the Logan the steering may not be always correctly 'centered' but the alignment may still be right. The reason is that the steering cannot be taken off then 'centered' depending on the alignment. The steering will have to be 'centered' and then the alignment taken care of.

So SM workshop has come back to me saying Strut is bent and they need to replace it .The cost of the part is Rs 2000/- plus labour and they say its cannot be included in exteded warranty though I have one ...Iam wonderinf what is the point in Exntded warranty if they dont cover expensive stuff like this...

So looks like I will have to pay for wheel balancing /alignment and for strut and then labour...

A leaky strut would have been covered under warranty(manufacturing defect).

But a bent strut will not be covered as it would have happened because of driving over a patch of bad road at high speed.

well if u read the below as how many times I have gone to shop to fix the issue u will see what Iam talking about . I have done 3 wheel balancing in a span to 4000 Km..Reply from mahindra

Dear Mr. Ajai,

Thanks for your time to discuss the same over phone.

We have checked with our dealership on this.

The strut got damaged due to an external force and so could not be considered under extended warranty.

It is due to the nature of the failure, and not due to the failure itself for which we could not accept this under warranty.

Vehicle history :

1. 29th March 2008 : 2380 km : 1st service

2. 25th April 2008 : 3188 km: Fog lamp fitment, door vibration

3. 30th Jan 2009 : 15478 km : Wheel balancing, tyre rotation.

4. 31st Jan 2009 : 15498 km : pulling LH side alignment done

5. 20th Feb 2009 : 19053 km : Accident repair repeat wheel alignment

6. 8th June 09 : 25148 km : door rattling, Front RH mud flap fitment.

7. 31st Oct 2009 : 32374 km : LH pulling

We feel that the vehicle has run a considerable kilometer after the wheel allignment and suspect that the damage of the strut might

happened in the time around 1st week of June, as it has reported for the right side mud flap replacement on 8th June 2009.

Regret for the inconvenience.

Regards

You wont bend a strut by driving on bad roads you will only bend a strut by Impact ie Accident (or even falling off a Jack with no wheel on )
. 20th Feb 2009 : 19053 km : [b]Accident repair repeat wheel alignment
This is when your strut got damaged and the garage failed to fix it !!
So the repair work they did IS under warrenty

Martin ,
The accident Mahindra reffering to is a dent that car got when a bike rammed into the rear door .

I personall feel the work shop guys failed to recognise the defect in the below given period .

1. 30th Jan 2009 : 15478 km : Wheel balancing, tyre rotation.
2. 31st Jan 2009 : 15498 km : pulling LH side alignment done
3. 20th Feb 2009 : 19053 km : Accident repair repeat wheel alignment

so if u look at it the car clocked 4000 Km in 1 months time ..
Mean while I got a confirmation from the local guy saying that its not a wheel alignment problem ...

But Mahindra is plainly denying it ...Any ways good luck to them if Logan need to survive they better use common sense

I wish they were more logical like you

Roads here are so bad that bending a strut is easy when you hit a protruding stone/rock hard enough (kind of like hitting the curb at at angle). I've been there and done that (though this was not in the logan).

Also, struts are best replaced in pairs. You might want to replace both if you car has run more than 40-50K km. A good set of photographs would be nice. Also check for damage to lower arms and the strut mounts.

Hang on you guys what type of roads are you traveling on To hit a strut you must have a very high stone or kerb
(Also kerbs apear from the OUTSIDE of the wheel ) so you will bust your tirewall before you bend a strut and if you are driving around hitting bloody big rocks you need Landrovers

Well I see what you mean now by Strut this is part of the Macpherson Strut
or otherwise known as shock absorber I have never in my life seen a bent one
how can you bend them it must have been in an accident with a abbrupt STOP or as in the following artical bad fitting (this would NOT be from manufacturer )or overtightning the bolt above the Strut
