PostSubject: Engine Oil   Wed Sep 02, 2009 7:14 pm

Hi,

Has anyone tried using engine oils other than the standard one provided at the workshop at the time of servicing.

I would like to know how is the performance with other engine oil...Castrol GTX Magnatec or other similar types.

Also, after how many Km's should we replace the engine oil. As per the servicing schedule, it is 10,000 kms.

With Regards,

Kaustuv Goswami.

PostSubject: Re: Engine Oil   Thu Sep 03, 2009 10:37 am

@kaustav: below is what I believe.
1. logan will not show any performance difference using different engine oil. this is because in my view it is already at its peak performance level.
2. engine oil will reflect to engine life as stu mentioned. however using standard engine oil would suffice. reason being logan is not meant for high truck level performance which has to undergo lots of frictions under heavy load and that too 24x7 mostly.
3. dont go by the ads that oil companies show on tv.

now again in case if the car is old (15+ years , approx 100000 kms on diesel , approx 150000 kms on petrol) then it may need frequent oil changes and using higher grade oil and stuff.

new engines can simply be taken for granted. should not be any issue.

4. again if we say and believe that using some oil instead of some other gives better performance, then kindly share the benchmarks based on which this performance increase can be measured. Measurement procedure leading to figures are needed. If some noticeable benefit is seen I can also use that better quality oil.

@vishala

Combined with its 50-litre tank, the model’s low fuel consumption gives it a basic range of over 1,000 kilometers. Economical to run, the Logan 1.5 dCi makes life easier for its owner. The running costs have been reduced, while the specified service interval is every 20,000 kilometers.

Hi,

Using an higher grade engine oil will never increase the performance of an engine. Using a semi synthetic or synthetic engine oil only ensures that the wear and tear is less compared to a mineral engine oil. If you are using a semi synthetic or synthetic engine oil, over a period of time then you will notice that the engine has become comparatively smooth. Of course, it is always recommended that during the first 10,000 Kms of the car, mineral oil should be used as the initial wear and tear is helpful. If you are using synthetic engine oil during this phase, the "run-in" period of the car will increase as the wear and tear will be less.

Regarding the peak performance level, almost all stock cars are tuned to perform at a certain level, which is not the peak. Proper modifications helps to enhance the performance of a car. I an using a K& N Cold Air Intake in my car. After using the same, the pickup has increased as well as the fuel economy. However, the fuel economy increase can only be observed in long drives in excess of 300 Kms.

However, these are my observations. But after completion of 2 years and driving almost 50K Kms, my car is still an excellent performer without even a single break down even driving continuously for 17 Hrs in single lane highways with heavy traffic and mountain stretches of Himalayas.

Regards,
Kaustuv.

Now I'm thinking we should have a thread on the testimonials of the Logan. Should we?

This is extraordinary (20000kms service interval). Please use the engine oil supplied at the Authorized Service Center. Its from 'ELF". It is an excellent brand. I don't find anything to be fiddled with this car except for one or two things like the addition of alloys or incorporating a pair of fog lamps wherever necessary.
I have done 45000Kms and it still feels like new. Absolute beauty. ;0

PostSubject: Re: Engine Oil   Sat Feb 05, 2011 3:55 pm

what I learned from the the service technicans at mahindra is that the normal service interval /change of engine oil is six months or 10000 kms which ever is earlier.

But I learned from the service book, the normal interval of changing engine oil is 5000 kms and and the service interval is 10000 kms or six months which ever is earlier. There are different suggestions for period of changing engine oil.

When I changed engine oil last time, the service technician at mahindra suggested to use an adidctive with engine oil. The cost of addictive is Rs.1300/-. But I simply refused it.
