PostSubject: Pickup Acceleration issues   Wed Mar 11, 2009 10:36 pm

Hi I own 1.6 GLS for more than 1 year and have driven 7500 Kms. Though i am satisfied with the overall performance of the vehicle . I found the acceleration and pickup wanting when i want to overtake other vehicles particularly in Ghat sections. Any solution for the same ? Thanks in Advance

Hi harik,

Welcome to the forum. As I can see, this is your first post.

I too have a GLS 1.6; however, one has found the power pretty okay.

Well, Logan being a different genre of vehicle - maximised for fuel efficiency and VFM, one cannot expect to match the power and pick up of a SX4 or the New Honda City. There is definitely a trade-off between power and FE.

That you have had the car for a while, I am sure you would have had the service centre people take a look at its engine tuning by now.

Any other 1.6 owners with similar observations?

PostSubject: Re: Pickup \Acceleration issues   Wed Mar 11, 2009 11:58 pm

The tests over here show that the Logan 1600 is faster on pickup than the VW Golf mainly due to its less weight the 1400 only takes 13 secs to 100kmh and the 1600 takes 10,2 secs this is pretty damn fast when you think that a BMW 3 CL takes 8 secs to 100
If you have only driven 7500km in the year how many of them have you driven fast ? Get out on the motorway and go through the gears take them out to extreme you will be suprised how you will get pushed back into your seat
treat your logan like a car and dont be afraid to give a bit of Gas
Stu

I have driven some 8000 km in 6 months and have not had problems with pickup on highways. Also used it in ghat sections.

We just shouldn't be afraid to rev it up a little. Doesn't seem to affect fuel economy too much either.

Check if the floor mat is obstructing the accelerator pedal to depress fully. This is one common problem Wink

The diesel motor is one gem of an engine. I have driven uphill (ghat sections), downhill, plains etc with full load and car seems to say "is this all you can throw at me, come on, you can do better than this". I have overtaken innumerable times on ghat sections and it does it in style. Make sure you are in the appropriate gear.
My friend who came down from Bahrain drove it and was mighty impressed with the way the car accelerated and handled.
In an earlier post I did mention that I touched 160km/hr briefly and that too without flooring the pedal.

my 1.6 picks up well too.. though i dont normally drive too fast .. am one of those conservative drivers that young girls may find boring Razz

however, everytime i have been insistent to my gas pedal the car reacts beautifully from the 3rd gear onwards and it hasn't hurt the generic petrol saving version.. i like maintaining steady 80-100kph speeds even on city roads (when its not crowded of course)...

all that i am trying to say is that though the logan is not the peppiest in its class.. it has a very solid acceleration and feels damn good..

i feel the same!! means when the ac is on!! while on the high way with ac on its a little sluggish with the accleration i have touched 160 kmph speed but took me some time to reach that speed and even cars like swift are harder to beat while acclerating!! but when u reach high speeds then its a piece of cake!! i own a petrol version and i have abserved that the accleration is good when u cross 4000 rpm !! try it!!

Another little trick is this you press the accelerator down and you come to what you think is the end BUT if you press harder you get MORE power
try it next time you overtake press the accelerator hard to the floor you will be suprised

I've driven my 1.4 to Matheran... anybody who's visited that place would know how precarious the slopes are. With four people in the car.. it is a bit sluggish.. but in general the power is adequate.
It is unllike the Dezire diesel with the fiat quadrajet engine. That engine is really tuned to make the car zip around... if you don't expect too much out of your Loagn it seems like a very comfortable car to drive aroud .. even in Ghat sections.

i believe the petrol engine in petrol logan is a 4 valve SOHC..
whereas most of latest petrol ones are 8 valve DOHC.

this makes a huge difference in pickup.

I think you mean 8 valve single Camshaft 2 per cylinder
and the other 1600cc could be (Not sure here ) 16 Valve double overhead cam 4 per cylinder

Same with Diesel Logan as well. It is 1461 cc SOHC 4 cylinder 2 valves per cylinder produces 65 @ 4000 bhp and 160 @ 2000 torque.

Fiat Linea is 1248 cc DOHC 4 cylinder 4 valves per cylinder produces 86 @ 4000 bhp and 203 @ 2500 torque.

Swift Dzire is 1248 cc DOHC 4 cylinder 4 valves per cylinder produces 75 @ 4000 bhp and 190 @ 2000 torque.

Price of all top models (with ABS) are almost same except Swift Dzire @ 613000.

thread owner simple answer is dont overtake. and if you want risk the drive and do it. take it in second gradually upwards to third on full gas. i have done it many times. and belive me its is unbeatable.

i believe logan should have provided the latest engine. this is not an area where they should have done cost cutting. too much cost cutting killed its sales. anyways who cares????

Yes, you need to understand the Logan's gearing to make use of its full potential. Shifting into too high a gear too soon actually doesnt get u up to speed as a judicious use of 3rd and a lot in 4th gear, all the way up to 3000-3500 rpm.

All engines are not at their max at WOT but at about 67% engine load, so flooring that accelerator pedal is not optimal for max acceleration.

PostSubject: Re: Pickup \Acceleration issues   Sat May 16, 2009 3:13 am

If you floor the accelerator in the correct gear it is the best and only thing to do !!! If you floor the accelerator in the WRONG gear then you need to go back to the driving school
Every car has gears for one reason they are to transfer the power of the motor through the gearbox to a differential which then transfers this power to a rotary movement to the drive wheels scratch Phew without gears you would not pull away .1st gear is just to move the car away and you should change up as soon as possible
If you need to go faster then drop a gear (second is a bit silly though) but from 5th to 4th is ok and if you need to change down from 4th to 3rd then you are going to slow anyway to play the overtaker bounce .I dont usualy drive on the Autobahns I drive mainly on the B roads and I have NEVER had any probs with power in my 1400 its right gear right time

i did the pressing down hard bit .... the acclerator does travel further down.. and yes it does give a surge of power when you press down fully.

Thanks Staurt.

The other day I felt the clutch play was not right (no play) and had them loosen it. They loosened it way too much. The vehicle was sluggish especially with the A/C on. I have got it tightened 2 times and the second time seems to have taken care of the acceleration to a great extent. I still feel it can be tightened some more as the pedal travel is not 'long' as it was earlier. Also it jerks just after gear changes when releasing the clutch. I asked the engineer at Sireesh and he informed that the travel at the gerabox end should be 30mm. Smile

OH No dont play with the clutch It has nothoing to do with the acceleration at all all it does is temporaly release the motor from the gearbox to enable gearchange and if it is not set up correct it will SLIP and you will smell this after 100mtrs YES THAT WILL AFFECT THE POWER but only till you have BURNT out the clutch Your logan should have started to pull away at around the the first quarter of the clutch release DO not leave your foot on the clutch (And dont rest it on top of the pedal) take the foot away and place it on the floor at the side
I would also say that the clutch play should be at the pedal 30mm is a lot of play on the gearbox end

PostSubject: Re: Pickup \Acceleration issues   Mon May 25, 2009 9:03 pm

Stu, I checked the clutch 'travel' at the gearbox end and it indeed travels 30mm or so. I do remember reading some manual which said that 60mm (+ or - 5mm) should be the difference between 2 points on the clutch cable assembly. I measured that and it too is 60mm or so.
I do take off my foot from the clutch immediately after changing gears.
I have driven the car for more than 100kms or so after the clutch adjustment and the acceleration/power seems to be very close to what it was earlier.
As mentioned earlier I think the 'nut' has to be tightened by 1/2 to 1 turn. I'll have to check with the people at Sireesh.
By the way the service experience at Sireesh is improving.
