PostSubject: Absence of locking pin on the wheel hub / brace cost me a ne   Wed Oct 30, 2013 12:02 am

Tools used, hydraulic trolley jack, jack stand and the cross spanner.
Folks who have changed the wheels of their vehicles would be able to understand what I write here, as I have tried to explain it as far as I possibly can. I had gone tyre service station to get the tyre rotation done where after the work was over I was informed that one screw on the front right tyre is slipping, upon investigating further it was found that the thread on the wheel hub itself had slipped. Normally I do the rotation myself but this time as I was hard-pressed for time thought of getting it done at a service station.
Well this is classic case where the locking pin is absent on the wheel hub. When one changes the tyre ( in case of Logan vehicle) it is very difficult to align  holes on the wheel hub while holding the tyre in the air and then immediately screwing the same as the weight of the wheel makes the alignment shift and in a hurry if one tries to screw the nut in, it is bound to go in at a angle and after tightening, it definitely will ruin the threads on the wheel hub or on the bolt itself. Especially, one has to take care while using a electric / power / air wrench ( do not know the name for it) that is used nowadays , as the mechanic would go on tightening it without realizing that it is misaligned. Where as if one aligns it by a hand held torque wrench there are less chances of it mis-aligning.

Now imagine this scenario late in the evening or at night, on the Indian highways where there is absolutely no light on the road ( except cities) , if one has to change a tyre in darkness, due to lack of the locking pin we would end up only trying to align the wheel hub and the bolts / nuts, extremely dangerous , considering the dangers on the roads that prevail.

Does anyone have a better solution / suggestion  to change the wheel especially the alignment part with the wheel hub following which the bolts can be screwed in easily? Well I make use of a brick which is thick enough that I keep underneath the wheel that is being changed and try to align the wheel hub and the bolts. I need to carry the brick in the boot of my car all the time though. The other method that I think of it to raise the car off the ground just enough so that the wheel can be pulled away from the wheel hub so that one can get support from the ground, but then this would be ok on a flat ground.

Stuart, the wheel brace does not have wheel nuts fixed on it or else it would have been a piece of cake for anyone to change the tyre. The challenge here is to align the holes on the wheel brace with that on the wheel and then insert the screw while the alignment is correct and tighten it. A locking pin in this scenario would have been ideal as it would have aligned the holes making it easier to insert the wheel nut but Renault / Mahindra have thought of it the other way.

Absolute crazy stuff in the video, well I admire the skills that these chaps display of driving on the side of the wheels and the stunt thereafter. Cool

But interestingly the wheel hub has the bolts jutting out from it hence making it that much easier to mount the tyre on the bolts and then to have the screw tightened.

We wish our vehicle too had the bolts jutting out from the wheel hub.Rolling Eyes

Anyway the suggestion that you made is the easiest and simple commonsense one well how come did I not have the thought instead of sweating it out.Idea Did I loose some of mine:shock:

Stuart,
I request you to find out the price for a wheel hub ( Front wheel) as i have bee quoted a figure of INR 27K, well, naturally I am upset with this cost but need to find out the price as well. I made enquires in shops around but as usual the part goes out of stock. By knowing the price I would only have a piece of mind as regards to the workshops truthfulness about the part and the price. Well it may not be the same in Europe but neither should it differ vastly when converted in to INR or who knows.

Neither do I have a choice but to go for a new part as this is a critical thing I feel and replacing it with a cheap duplicate might prove to be costly later on.

Yes I had seen this video some time ago, seems to be a novice wanting to try off roading, anyway please look out for the cost of a wheel hub.
